About Peru

From colonial architecture to the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, Peru is home to a diverse geography and population. Situated in the northern coastal region, Piura offers a tropical climate that extends to the mountainous Amazonian highlands to the Pacific Ocean.

CHOICE Humanitarian utilizes its proven model of self-development to empower and mobilize rural villages across northern Peru. Having merged with a longtime local NGO in 2015 (Feed the World), CHOICE Peru now works across the northern region, promoting positive change in the lives of numerous rural communities.

> Project & Community Details

Community: Santa Elena in the district La Arena located an hour south of the city of Piura. On this expedition, we will be working with the community to construct a center that will focus on early childhood health that will be the first of its kind in this village.

Check out the project details here!

CHOICE has been working in this community for 9 months now, and has been in the district for 3 years. This community is one of the communities with 20% malnutrition and 43% anemia prevalence among community members. These community members eat for less than a dollar a day. Their diet is based mostly on rice with little animal-based proteins. Their diet normally consists of bean soups or wheat-based cereals. The community culture is based in agriculture and raising sheep and other livestock.

CHOICE projects in this area give community members alternative ways to make a living in small business opportunities and leadership. The small business associations that have already been established in the community have already had their first sales and have been very successful. The surrounding communities know about these businesses and come to the community to buy products. CHOICE has also been working in community projects in education, women's rights, and combating malnutrition in the community.

During the expedition, you will be sleeping a large, central community building with cement floors. There is electricity available as well as bathrooms.

Previous CHOICE Expeditions: Guatemala (3), Peru (1)

Gabriela joined CHOICE Humanitarian 7 years ago as a volunteer translator with CHOICE for the Spanish-speaking In-Country Directors. She fell in love with CHOICE's mission and began to take the opportunity to volunteer with CHOICE with her family any chance she got. She became a volunteer with CHOICE for the long haul! Shortly after, she was given the opportunity to attend Leadership Training to become a Certified Expedition Leader, and then led her first expedition to Guatemala with her daughter.

She says her experience as a Choice Expedition Leader "changed my life and the lives of my daughters". For Gabriela, expeditions "teach you the most important qualities and virtues, and now I live my life according to those virtues and qualities I learned. I learned humility, compassion, sisterhood, kindness, patience, and most of important of, all love for my all my fellowmen. I know firsthand what it means that to have an act of kindness is measurable. I also learned my calling- I want to leave this world better than I found it."

She worked as a Project Manager and trainer for over six years and then ventured off to pursue other interests. She is fascinated by people and their stories of overcoming challenges and finding lasting happiness. This also has inspired her to step into the public speaking arena. She has shared her experiences of the village and how they can relate to everyday life with audiences in Utah and Denver.
